Translation Coordinator

 

We are looking for a new Translation Coordinator to expand the pool of translators and to employ and regularise digital technology as part of the translation process. The position sits within the Communications Team in the Programme Resources Department.

Position: VAC0123 Translation Coordinator

Location: London (hybrid working considered after probation period)

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week

Salary: £37,509.67 Contributory pension scheme; generous travel-to-work allowance

Contract: Permanent

Benefits: Contributory pension scheme; generous travel to work allowance; 25 days annual leave plus 8 bank holidays per annum, café discount.

About the Role

The organisation is a global church and charity now officially working in 134 countries. The movement’s requirement for clear communication in multiple languages is vital, predominately through the translation of books and a wide variety of resources to inform, educate and equip our people.

 

The Translation Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the translation of approved publications into the seven official languages. These are: English, French, Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili and Tamil. The incumbent works with a team of highly skilled translators across the seven languages. In addition, they work with the charity personnel in countries whose language is not one of the official languages, but whose funding allows them to organise their translation needs independently.

 

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • Experience and role-related knowledge
  • Written English to a high standard of syntax and accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • High-level translation skill in at least one language other than English
  • Extensive experience of coordinating a team, the members of which operate remotely
  • Basic knowledge of theology, principles, terminology and practice
  • Basic knowledge of the organisational structure of the charity
  • Extensive experience with both traditional and digital communication
  • Experience of working in a publishing environment
  • Fully conversant with the Microsoft suite of applications (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Effective time-management skills and self-motivation
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Both a self-starter and a team player

 

Qualifications and training

  • A degree in translation studies (graduate or postgraduate), a degree in English Language/Literature, a degree with a major in a language other than English, or other equivalent qualifications and significant relevant experience.

 

Motivation

  • Able to work within the charity’s Christian ethos
  • Passionate about communicating the Christian faith via print and digital media, and providing reliable and up-to-date information about the international Salvation Army
